Soufrière

Soufrière is a town on the West Coast of Saint Lucia. The town and the surrounding district has a population of 7,935. Originally founded by the French, it was the original capital of the island.

There were large estates run by plantation owners of French origin and their descendants still live in the area. The French Revolution of 1789 resulted in many Royalists being executed and the slaves freed. However, Napoleon reintroduced slavery when he came to power.

The British invaded St Lucia shortly after, but the slaves and French deserters fought them in a guerrilla campaign until 1803 when they were defeated and St Lucia became a British colony. Also, during that time, Castries became the capital of St Lucia.

Canaries

Canaries (or Kanawe in Creole) is located on the West Coast of Saint Lucia. It is a small fishing village and it is nestled along the West Coast road, between Anse La Raye and Soufrière, and there are scenic views from both the Northern and Southern approaches.

Until the 1960s there was no road transport to the village and it was only accessible by boat. Since the construction of the West Coast Road it is a stop on the road between Castries and Soufrière.

The name Kanawe is derived from the Amerindian word for cooking pots. In the past Canaries had a large sugar plantation that ran inland up the valley that stretches in an easterly direction from the village. Records show that Canaries has existed since 1763 and the original settlers came from the neighbouring island of Martinique.

Anse La Raye

Anse La Raye or Anse-La-Raye is the largest town in Anse La Raye Quarter, Saint Lucia; it is located on the island’s western side, near Marigot Bay. It is a picturesque place with fine examples of French and English colonial architecture.

The name Anse La Raye is derived from the rays that are found in the bay, the English translation means Bay of Rays. Two rivers flow into the bay, these are the Grande Rivière de l’Anse la Raye and the Petite Rivière de l’Anse la Raye.

On a Friday night there is a fish fry where the local fishermen showcase their skills and where lobsters, fish and lambi (conch) are cooked and eaten. The Fish Fry is located on Front Street which runs parallel to the beach.

Marigot Bay

Marigot Bay is located on the western coast of the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia, 3.75 miles southwest from Castries and a short distance from the Saint Lucian National Marine Reserve.
It is surrounded on three sides by steep, forested hills.
The inland portion of the bay forms a hurricane hole, used to shelter boats from hurricanes.
Marigot Bay is a historic landmark, having been the site of a number of battles between the French and British navies.
